A Coachella Alphabet: Kaiser Chiefs

Kaiser Cheifs

Name: Kaiser Chiefs
Genre: Rock
Day: Sunday

Wikipedia sez: “Kaiser Chiefs are an English new wave rock band from Leeds, formed early in 1997. They were formed by school friends Nick Hodgson, Simon Rix and Nick Baines. They were later joined by Andrew White an art school graduate and Ricky Wilson, who they spotted singing with a Rolling Stones tribute band. Originally they were named Parva. After reinventing themselves as Kaiser Chiefs in 2003, the band made a strong impact on the British music scene, culminating in winning three Brit Awards for ‘Best Group’, ‘Best British Rock Act’ and ‘Best Live Act’ in 2006.”

If I had the ability to claim the Kaiser Chiefs as Australians and give up Jet to the Brits, I’d do it in an instant. Not because Jet are that shit (they really are), but because the Kaiser Chiefs are just a good, consistent rock band. I haven’t heard a rock song so catchy in the last few years that can match Everyday I Love You Less and Less, and latest single Ruby is a joy to listen to as well. The big bonus is that they have been known to bring their A game to festivals, preforming everywhere around Europe, the United States and opening for the Foo Fighters in Australia to boot. I look forward to seeing them.

Likelyhood of Seeing at Coachella: Yup!

A Coachella Alphabet: Justice

Name: Justice
Genre: Electronic
Day: Saturday

Wikipedia sez: “Justice are a French electro duo consisting of Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay. They are managed by Pedro Winter (”Busy P”), who also manages Daft Punk and is the head of Ed Banger Records. Justice first came to prominence through their remix of Simian’s track “Never Be Alone”, originally released in 2003 on Ed Banger Records and in 2004 on DJ Hell’s International DeeJay Gigolo Records. The track was eventually given a commercial release in the UK in the summer of 2006, under the title “We Are Your Friends” on Ten Records, a sub-label of Virgin Records.”

There is a fair bit of discussion on the official Coachella message boards about who is better, Tiesto or Justice. Personally my pick is Tiesto but after listening to Justice, they are not far behind. Unlike many trance artists who tend to stick with what they are familiar with, Justice tend to mix it up to still make a mainstream trance sound combined with whatever samples they can get their hands on. Hearing guitar along with electronic piano carefully placed on top of each other sounds awesome to me, and I may have to even check them out.

Likelyhood of Seeing at Coachella: Maybe, just maybe..

A Coachella Alphabet: Junior Boys

Junior Boys

Name: Junior Boys
Genre: Electronic
Day: Sunday

Wikipedia sez: “Junior Boys are a Canadian indie electronic pop group. Originally a duo, Jeremy Greenspan and Johnny Dark created a sound that would reconcile their influences. Years of collaboration followed and the resulting demo was duly sent out, but after a heap of rejections and near misses, they were resigned to being bedroom beat constructors. After Johnny left the band to pursue other interests, there didn’t seem much point in continuing. That was until KIN heard their demo at the end of 2002 and commissioned more work from the remaining member. Hooking up with his engineer, Matt Didemus, Jeremy began again, writing more material and pulling an album together.”

Bops and beeps describe Junior Boys electronic sound. Similar to Royskopp or Ladytron the duo make synthesizer based tunes without the special something that those two groups have. It’s like they got some random music from a Game Boy emulator, ran it through a few filters in Adobe Audition and then tweaked it a little more so no-one can tell what they did. That and they seem to use the exact same beep sample in all of their sogns, which in my opinion is the sign of someone stuck in their ways.

Likelyhood of Seeing at Coachella: It’s not for me.
