A Coachella Alphabet: Digitalism

Digitalism

Name: Digitalism
Genre: Electronic
Day: Friday

Wikipedia sez: “Digitalism are a German electro duo consisting of Jens Moelle and Ismail Tuefekci. Digitalism also have remixed tracks for Tom Vek, The Futureheads, Daft Punk, Tiga, Klaxons, Depeche Mode, Cut Copy and many others, including an unofficial re-edit of Fire in Cairo by The Cure (entitled Digitalism in Cairo). Their tracks and remixes are played by DJs such as Erol Alkan, 2 Many DJ’s, Boys Noize and Justice.”

It’s really hard to find decent video of dance/electronic arts that have good quality audio (where the bass isn’t dominating the sound). It was a bit easier for Digitalism, as their sound revolves around funky grooves rather then fat bass. Don’t get me wrong, the bass is still there but Digitalism’s music centres on lush harmonies with a little bit of guitar thrown in for kicks. Fun music to dance to, that’s for sure.

Likelyhood of Seeing at Coachella: They sound good to me, so I’ll give ‘em a go.

A Coachella Alphabet: David Guetta

David Guetta

Name: David Guetta
Genre: Dance
Day: Friday

Wikipedia sez: “David Guetta (born 7 November 1967 in Paris) is a French DJ. At age 13, he began mixing his first vinyls. At 17, he worked as DJ at Broad, Paris, launching his career. In 1988–1990, he mixed house music at Radio Nova. In 2005, his single “The World Is Mine” topped European dance charts. He appeared in an advertisement for L’Oréal hair cream. David Guetta has played on Sensation White, the worlds leading dance event, the two last years, and will be performing there this year as well. This has given David Guetta credibility as one of the world top DJs.”

I was pretty indifferent to Guetta until I realized he was the one behind “Love Don’t Let Me Go”. Not sure what that song is? It’s the one with the really annoying loop at the start yelling DANCING AND CRYING DANCING AND CRYING DANCING AND CRYING YEAH! That song is irritating as hell, epitome of mainstream dance music. After listening to some of his other stuff, it follows the same sort of sound so it’s not my cup of tea by any means.

Likelyhood of Seeing at Coachella: Nope.

A Coachella Alphabet: Damien Rice

Damien Rice

Name: Damien Rice
Genre: Folk
Day: Sunday

Wikipedia sez: “Damien Rice (born December 7, 1973) is an Irish folk singer most famous for his two albums ‘O’ and ‘9′. Damien Rice was born in Dublin, Ireland to George and Maureen Rice and grew up in Celbridge, County Kildare, Ireland. He was originally in the band Juniper, a rock band which released the singles “The World Is Dead” and “Weatherman”. On the eve of recording their first full album for Polygram in 1999, Rice became disenchanted with the commercial label and quit. His Juniper bandmates became Bell X1. He moved to rural Italy where he played acoustic guitar, wrote songs, and busked around Europe until he was able to form a band and get coffeeshop gigs in the Dublin area. Exploiting a lucky connection to David Arnold, his second cousin, Rice was able to record O, for which he won the Shortlist Music Prize in 2003. The other members of the band are Lisa Hannigan who sings and occasionally plays guitar and bass; cellist Vyvienne Long; percussionist Tom Osander (aka: Tomo) a member of the 90’s jam band God Street Wine; and bassist Shane Fitzsimons.”

I haven’t got anything against Damien Rice, but his music is just not for me. Something about it just doesn’t work. I did have a laugh at the Wikipedia article mentioning that he is stick of people recording his concert with mobile phones rather then just watching and listening to it tho.

Likelyhood of Seeing at Coachella: Nope.

A Coachella Alphabet: CSS

Cansei de Ser Sexy

Name: CSS
Genre: Indie
Day: Sunday

Wikipedia sez: “Cansei de Ser Sexy (Portuguese for Tired of Being Sexy), also known as CSS, is a Brazilian band from São Paulo, where they benefited from unprecedented levels of hype on local newspapers and TV channels. The main musical influence is electro-rock, and this is blended with other media e.g design, cinematography and fashion, and then augmented with plaintive lyrics in English and Portuguese. CSS emphasizes style, fashion and a cool aesthetic, over their place in the music industry. Their broken English compositions are sung with a strong São Paulo accent: fans say this adds a special appeal.”

I am struggling to work out how you could dub CSS as indie given they have the most accessable mainstream sound of any band I’ve sampled so far on the Coachella lineup. Their music is friendly for ears of all kinds and sounds like a combination of artists I’ve heard before, I just couldn’t name them for the life of me right now. If this group was from New York or Paris I don’t think they’d get the attention they get since they are from Sao Paulo.

Likelyhood of Seeing at Coachella: Not a chance.
