A Coachella Alphabet: Busdriver

Busdriver

Name: Busdriver
Genre: Rap
Day: Friday

Wikipedia sez: “Busdriver (born Regan Farquhar) is a hip-hop artist from Los Angeles. He is known for his staccato, jazzy, free-association rap, and the eccentric personality he expresses through it. Busdriver released his first album, Memoirs of the Elephant Man, in 2001, followed by This Machine Kills Fashion Tips and Temporary Forever in 2002. 2003 brought a collaboration with fellow underground artists Radioinactive and Daedelus for the experimental LP The Weather. His most recent releases are 2004’s Cosmic Cleavage (produced by longtime collaborator Daddy Kev) and Fear of a Black TangentThe Unicorns’ offshoot project, Th’ Corn Gangg. He later appeared on the Islands’ album in 2005 . In 2005 he was also enlisted (along with Vic Booz and Subtitle) as a Corn Ganggster, rapping with Return to the Sea, on the song Where There’s A Will There’s A Whalebone.”

Busdriver came to prodomently on Australian radio with the track Unemployed Black Astronaut, which is crazy for two reasons: 1 - Australian radio playing rap/hip-hop and 2- Australia radio playing someone as insane as Busdriver.? Busdriver makes abstract rap, his lyrics don’t make sense for the most part and quite often you wonder what the hell he is on about. Personally that’s what makes him so great to me, you never know what your going to get when he performs.

A Coachella Alphabet: Brother Ali

Brother Ali

Name: Brother Ali
Genre: Rap
Day: Friday

Wikipedia sez: “Brother Ali (born Ali Newman) is an American hiphop artist. Though he initially produced his own material (his cassette tape-only Rites of Passage EP (2000) was self-produced), Brother Ali turned to Ant (Anthony Davis), Rhymesayers Entertainment’s in-house producer, to produce his first two releases on Rhymesayers, 2003’s Shadows on the Sun and 2004’s Champion EP. The albums proved immediately popular with fans who had largely been introduced to Ali when he opened for Atmosphere on their national tour for the God Loves Ugly album. Ant’s funk- and soul-inflected beats often matched the gravitas of Ali’s rhymes. Ali’s buoyant, agile flow and exuberant, expressive voice resonated on key tracks such as Star Quality, Picket Fence, Forrest Whitiker, Chain Link, and Rain Water.

Brother Ali was a name that sounded familiar to me yet when I googled up an image of him, I had no idea who he was or what music he made. Turns out that he’s apart of Minnesota based Rhymeslayers, best known for Atmosphere. That’s pretty much where the similarities end, because Ali is more of an old-school MC, bringing his house-party style skills with him. It reminds me a little bit of Jurassic 5, if Jurassic 5 was contained in one person. It also turns out that he was in Australia last year, which means I really should of heard about him earlier.

A Coachella Alphabet: Brazilian Girls

Brazilian Girls

Name: Brazilian Girls
Genre: Dance
Day: Friday

Wikipedia sez: “Brazilian Girls are a quartet from New York City known for their eclectic blend of electronic dance music with everything from samba and reggae to house and lounge styles. The band has described their sound as “melting pop.” None of the members are actually from Brazil and the only female member is lead singer Sabina Sciubba. Didi Gutman plays keyboards for the band, Aaron Johnston plays the drums and Jesse Murphy plays the bass. ”

Many people say that Brazilian Girls are known for their edgy sound and controversial, energetic shows. So I expected to see raving videos full of flare on YouTube, but what I really saw was over-coriagraphed, lifeless performances. This isn’t Peaches people, it’s dull dance music that would only be noticed in the United States (and ignored in Europe and everywhere else).

A Coachella Alphabet: Blonde Redhead

Blonde Redhead

Name: Blonde Redhead
Genre: Rock
Day: Saturday

Wikipedia sez: “Blonde Redhead is an alternative rock or indie rock band. It was formed by Kazu Makino, Maki Takahashi and twin brothers Simone and Amedeo Pace. They take their name from a song by DNA, a 70’s and 80’s no wave band from New York. Blonde Redhead has gradually increased in popularity in the underground music scene. Their early music has been described as emulative of Sonic Youth, but their more recent releases have begun to stray from this generalization. Kazu Makino is noted for her high, eerie voice, which hovers over melodic guitar riffs and rhythmic drum beats.”

Blonde Redhead are weird ones, music with a somewhat harmonic, beautiful sound to it with just a bit of depression added to it by the lyrics. Drum machine beats added with guitar and lyrics from a guy who sounds similar to Brian Molko. Usually I like these sort of artists but I’m from what I’ve heard of Blonde Redhead so far it just doesn’t seem to work for me,I think it’s because of the drums not gelling with the guitar. From what I’ve read about them they are a band who sounds much better live then on album, so I may have to give them a chance.
