A Coachella Alphabet: Arctic Monkeys

Arctic Monkeys

Name: Arctic Monkeys
Genre: Rock
Day: Friday

Wikipedia sez: “Arctic Monkeys are an English four-piece indie rock/post-punk revival band originating from High Green, a suburb of Sheffield. Formed in 2002, the band currently consists of Alex Turner on lead vocals and guitar, Jamie Cook on guitar, Matt Helders on drums and backing vocals and Nick O’Malley on bass guitar, a position formerly held by Andy Nicholson. Arctic Monkeys achieved chart success with their first two singles, “I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor” and “When the Sun Goes Down”, reaching number one in the UK Singles Chart. Their debut album Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not became the fastest-selling debut album in British music history and received critical acclaim, winning the 2006 Mercury Prize.”

So who the fuck ar.. okay okay, I won’t go down that path. I don’t mind rock music in general but you’d be hard pressed to find a new rock band loved by many that I also love. The Killers? Please. Franz Ferdinand? You gotta be kidding me. Bloc Party? They are trash. So for some reason I can’t get enough of Arctic Monkeys. I jumped on the bandwagon pretty late, but given how often “Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not” has spun at my place, I might of made up for it. It’s fun music to dance to, catchy as hell with brilliant lyrics to boot, the complete package. One of the major bands that I am really looking forward to seeing at Coachella.

Likelyhood of Seeing at Coachella: Certainty.

A Coachella Alphabet: Andrew Bird

Andrew Bird

Name: Andrew Bird
Genre: Indie
Day: Saturday

Wikipedia sez: “Andrew Bird is an American musician, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. He was born in Illinois and resides in the Chicago area. Bird’s musical expertise encompasses proficiency in violin, whistling, voice and guitar, amongst others. He was often pegged by critics as a musical chameleon early in his career, displaying his varied musical influences without, perhaps, adding anything new. His years of solo song-craft have now enabled him to produce a sound that is uniquely his own.”

Andrew Bird is an interesting creature who makes interesting music. Listening to his live stuff your ears get a little bit of everything - some classical style violin, add some hip-hop inspired drums, a little bit of electronic sampling with Bird doing the res when singing, whistling and playing guitar. The sounds that come out as a result are unique, and from the little bit I have listened to so far I like it, but really need to hear some more to form a true opinion.

Likelyhood of Seeing at Coachella: Semi-Likely

A Coachella Alphabet: Anathallo

Anathallo

Name: Anathallo
Genre: Indie
Day: Sunday

Wikipedia sez: “Anathallo is an indie band originally from Mt. Pleasant, Michigan and now based in Chicago, Illinois. Anathallo utilizes a wide variety of instruments, including horns, guitars, drums, piano, bells, and even unconventional objects like chains, velcro strips, stomp boxes, and pipes. The band has released several recordings through Selah Records, a vinyl release through Potential Getaway Driver, as well as completely independent releases.”

It’s pretty safe to say that before I began to write this article, I hadn’t heard of Anathallo. So I did my research and found a lot of people raving about what incredible music they make. But to me, it seemed like too much hype. I listen to their music and while it tries to sound spectacular, for some reason it just falls short. The music is a mis-mash of many instruments accompanied by somewhat forgettable lyrics. Best be your own judge, but it’s just standard over-hyped indie fare to me.

Likelyhood of Seeing at Coachella: Nah.
