Mike’s TV Musings for January 31 - February 7 2007
No excuses, I’m just really lazy. Today on the schedule: Veronica Mars, Scrubs, Saturday Night Live, Studio 60, The Sarah Silverman Program, World’s Greatest Sporting Bloopers and Louie Theroux’s Special. Spoilers follow..
Scrubs - His Story IV - Wow.. this just blew. I could not care less on how Elliot or Cox feel on the war on Iraq (even if it meant that Keith was finally able to have one funny section of dialogue). Kelso’s story just wasn’t that amusing even if we did get the chance to see him wearing scrubs. Speaking of thinking back.. remember when J.D. had that girlfriend he knocked up all the way back to one episode previous? What the hell happened to that? Not even one mention? This show is going down the gurgler so quickly that I wonder how they can be serious about returning for another season. Thumbs way down.
Saturday Night Live - Drew Barrymore/Lily Allen - Such a good start but such a speedy fall. The American Idol sketch was perfect (good singers being shown for a note while we focus on the sideshow freaks) and Drew’s introduction was spot on (including Will Forte’s super creepy turn on - I’m convinced that he was just showing himself there). Then there was the great Dakota Fanning Show sketch with some of the best dialogue I’ve heard on SNL in a long time:
From there it fell downwards, finally dying with Versace Super Bowl Party. I can’t get enough of Maya Ruldolph (she’s second to Forte as far as the current cast goes in my opinion) but she stunk up the join - more the fault of the writers I guess who decided just to trot out the catchphrases rather then work hard and write a gag (god forbid they write an ending to a sketch anymore). Lily Allen appeared to be miming off a live recording tape, I swore that mouth didn’t match up with a few notes. So much potential for this episode.. thumbs down.
The Sarah Silverman Program - Officer Jay - This was just off the wall wacky and I loved every bit of it. Between the bad children’s television inspired songs to the horribly stupid dialogue (”Hey, who are those guys!?”) every moment I loved. It’s really hard to talk about this program, if you’ve seen Sarah’s movie Jesus is Magic the show is basically the non stand-up scenes added with storyline to make a show. Laura Silverman as Sarah’s little sister was great in her roll. It’s been too long since I’ve watched something so wacky, and while it’s not at Strangers with Candy levels yet, it has the potential to be. Thumbs up.
Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip - The Harriet Dinner Part II - How this show manages to pack so much in forty four minutes I can’t work out. This episode is probably up there just behind the Christmas Show as far ranking each episode goes because just about everything was resolved while starting some new things. We found out what Jordan really thinks of Danny as the relationship restarted (and I can’t wait til the media get a hold of this because the network will go nuts), Lucy forgiving Tom then flipping the date was a nice touch, Cal needs to be in the show more if he’s going apeshit and wanting to kill and eat animals and as for Matt and Harriet? Well you know it’s not over but I just hope Matt stops the chase for a little while and finds something else. Great episode, but the fact that they stuffed so much in (I didn’t even mention the stuff between Simon and Darius or Tom looking after Sun) makes me fear that the end is closing in. Thumbs up.
World’s Greatest Sporting Bloopers - It’s sports bloopers. I liked the one where the guy got hurt. I didn’t like the one where the guy stuffed up his lines in an advertisement, that isn’t sports. Eh. Thumbs up.
Louie Theroux Gambling in Las Vegas - Now I am a huge fan of Louie’s work on TV Nation and his own show Weird Weekends, so given he’s chasing gamblers in Vegas this show should be great. Eh.. not so much. While Theroux still traps his interviewees to give the answer he is looking for, it was just sad to watch these degenerate gamblers proceed to stick chip after chip on the table and lose it all, and it’s hard to make something like that entertaining. The high point of the show was at the end where Louie stocked up on Bloody Mary’s and took on the baccarat table.. and won! Maybe I’ve just been spoilt by too many decent Weird Weekend’s in the past. Thumbs in the middle.
Still To Come: A shitload of television. I’ve stopped keeping track.
More Comedy Festival acts have been announced. It’s probably too early to say but I don’t think Demetri Martin is making the trip across this year, sucks. However there is still plenty on so I’ll be seeing a few shows, that’s for sure. That will do it for tonight.
