Three various disappointments from 2006
Well we are getting to the end of LIST-O-MANIA for 2006 and I figured it is time to look at the three things that let me down this year, be it music, television, movies or something else completly. Once again in no order, the disappointments are..
- Judith Lucy - I Failed @ The Melbourne International Comedy Festival
I remember really looking forward to this show after reading an article written in the Age about her latest stint in radio and how the show would be about this. But Judith’s show did not go any deeper then the article as she went into various tangents on her life. Sure, comedians go on tangents that’s what they do, but I guess I just expected it to be a little more on point after reading advertisements and articles for the show.
- DJ Shadow - The Outsider and Cut Chemist - The Audiences Listening
I’m a big fan of both these guys - especially when together but both these albums just stunk. Rather then going down a similar route of hard instrumental beats like Endtroducing did, Shadow decided to do a bay area mixtape without the mixing with some uninspired tracks. Cut Chemist on the other hand took to what he is familure with and grabbed the turntables and a whole host of 45s, but what he did with them I still don’t know - it’s not Product Placement or Brainfreeze, that’s for sure. Hopefully Cut Chemist will be back with J5 in the new year.
- Borat - Cultural Learnings of American for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan
This was supposed to be the greatest movie ever! It’s Borat making fun of Americans, so how can you screw this up especially after doing two great seasons of Ali G in the USAiii? Well, somehow they managed it. I can deal with stuff like “In My Country There Is Problem/Throw the Jew Down the Well” because the humour behind it is the audience acting as if what they are seeing is legit and singing along - but watching the “Running of the Jew” sketch was plain unfunny. I could get over re-doing sketches (the dinner party) but it seems that too much time was spent on the story linking the sketches - it would of just been easier to go without it and add a few more in (in similar style to Kentucky Fried Movie). Big disappointment.
