My top three movies.. I guess?
So I was preparing to write up this entry on my favourite ten movies of the year when I realised - I haven’t really watched much released this year. Don’t get me wrong, there was a whole heap of stuff that was released this year that I had plans of seeing, but I only ended up watching maybe ten of them. I didn’t see any of the top grossing films in 2006 (which shows you my taste in film, hah!). So by default - my top three movies of 2006 in no particular order.
- Dave Chappelle’s Block Party
- Genre: Documentary
- Director: Michel Gondry
When I first heard that Dave was doing a concert film littered with stand-up, I knew something special was coming. Dave previously had some of the finest acts in hip-hop on his show and managed to bring them back together to perform together. The fact that he managed to bring the Fugees back together to perform was amazing in itself, but Blackstar and The Roots don’t let the viewer down in the slightest. While the documentary parts don’t stand out (apart from the interesting story about the old couple in the delapated house), it definitely turns what could of been a video of a concert into a proper film. Worth checking out for Talib Kweli’s performance of Get By where he just rips it (and probably Kanye West’s Jesus Walks coming a close second).
- Snakes On A Plane
- Genre: Action
- Director: David R. Ellis
Snakes On A Plane was probably one of the most hyped up movies at the end of 2005 thanks to websites and blogs going crazy about the redicious premise. After all, it’s Snakes On A Plane so you know what your going to get - and it’s not going to be a five star film. With that said, SOAP lived up to every expertation. It was a serious action film which took advantage of all the action film cliches but was so over the top that you don’t really care. It’s not a world beater and by the time you get to the end of it you realise that it never will be - so just enjoy this fun film for what it is, a fun film.
- Jackass Number Two
- Genre: Documentary
- Director: Jeff Tremaine
Now I can already see some of you questioning why I’d list a film like this. But Jackass Number Two does something that many sequels doesn’t, it outdoes the first one. It surprised me that this film had so many hysterical, brand new stunts that forced me to sit and pay attention for the entire 90 minutes, rather then turning away a few minutes in like the TV show would have me do. Don’t bother reading reviews for this film as they won’t properly explain the total carnage these performers put themselves through in Jackass Number Two. Just go and check it out.
I think next year I’ll watch a few more films released in the same year ![]()
